Free Plants
Quick tips for you: -do a quick walk through inventory of what you already have growing. Propagate these plants first. Irises, daylilies, hostas etc. can easily be divided at the root level between nodes and planted separately. Make cuttings from soft wood bushes, roses and the like. Dip the cuttings in a rooting solution available in home garden centers and then place them in smaller containers sheltered from harsh weather. -swap with friends, neighbors and family Often times people you know are just throwing extra plants that you could use. Call them and find out. -buy smaller sized perennials They will grow with time. My first oregano plant was 3" high and cost me $2.00. -start from seed Get a hold of good quality catalogs and order seed from them this will save you money because they often guaranty their seeds. -buy later in the season when plants go on sale take advantage of clearance sales but don't buy something that looks half gone, it will die on you. No savings there! -check with your municipalities, they sometimes give plants away at different times during the year, and may even have composters at a fraction of the regular cost -think creatively Change is good. Study magazines, web sites for ideas. Take a walk around the neighborhood for new ideas. -get familiar with a good nursery and be a repeat customer (this is very important because a good nursery can often help you identify plants you want and suggest to you the best way to take care of them for your zone.
