Get Organized
Perhaps the most important places to organize and have in order are storage areas around your home. Often, these are the last places that we organize and the first places where we stuff things the "out of sight out of mind" syndrome. The following plan is a generic organizing plan for even the worst areas: 1. Go to the problem area with three large boxes or bags. 2. One box will be for "trash":anything you know is broken, of no use to anyone or in horrible condition. 3. The next box is for "donations": things in good condition that you do not need anymore etc. You can give these to good will, or sell some items at a garage sale. 4. The last box is for things that you use, but don't belong in that area. Put them all in the last box and when you are finished clearing, cleaning and organizing the area start putting these items back where they belong in your home.*Do not start putting them away before this because you will not want to come back! 5. Clear everything that's left off shelf, floor, corners, cupboards etc. 6. Clean the storage area. 7. Put back all the things that belong in this area. 8. Have a mini family meeting to plan this project if you intend to delegate the job. If you have younger children you can have them help away from the mess and get them to start putting things back where they belong from the "wrong place" box. Kids love to sort things! 9. You may not be able to do the complete reorganization plan in one day, weekend etc. If this is your case give yourself a one step goal for one day, afternoon, hour or even 15 minutes of your time. *If you spend 15 minutes a day reorganizing a problem storage area, you'll have almost two hours done after just one week! **If you spend 30 minutes a day you'll have over three hours of work done! 10. If possible, write a list of what you have in the storage area in a notebook, index card, computer etc. then you'll know not to buy two Christmas tree stands like I did two years ago! All this just because we had a particular closet that had an inaccessible corner. The old stand had fallen in that corner. When you clear up your storage areas, the rest of your household automatically be more efficient and organized. If you lack storage place then consider whether you really need these things or have a relative or friend who can store them for you temporarily. There are also storage places that you can rent, this is especially good if you moved across cities into a smaller home or apartment but don't want to sell your extra furniture etc. The fun in this is that you'll usually find something you thought you had lost and maybe even a few surprises or two!
