Planning and the Holidays
Ten Easy steps to successful Holidays
1)
Estimate your Budget
Setting a budget will help you make decisions later on during the actual
preparations of the event. If you haven’t set a budget, you are
sure to run into Holiday Purchasing Overload Mode!
2)
Make Guest List
The Holidays are sometimes the most difficult to make guest lists for
because of old family tensions, a death of a loved one, flight schedules
etc. The rule of thumb is to be prepared. “Aunt Mary” may
change her mind and show up this year so have a backup seating plan and
food portion extenders such as extra side dishes.
3)
Select Menu
Select a menu that you are comfortable preparing. A large gathering of
guests is not the time to adventure into culinary testing. Write this
menu down and check that you have needed recipes on hand. Be careful of
seasonal items in recipes that you may have a harder time finding.
4)
Make Shopping List
Once your menu is selected, see what you have on hand and what you need
to purchase and remember that initial budget. Make a shopping list of
all needs ingredients by store, that way you’ll know what to get
where.
5)
Take Inventory of Serving Needs
Do you have enough dishes, cutlery, glasses etc.? Will you be using a
tablecloth, place mats or a combination? Do you have enough napkins, napkin
holders etc.? How about serving dishes, have you decided which meal you
will serve where? These are the types of questions that you should be
asking yourself at least a week before your event so that if need by you
have time to purchase things that are missing.
6)
Decide on Decorations
7)
Schedule Tasks
8)
Recruit help
9)
Relax
10)
Enjoy the Holidays
